Kinship Care/Extended families: Orphan children (death of father and mother) living with grandparents; child of devadasi (to know more about the devadasis read the Bidugade Project) in North Karnataka where the mother leaves the child with the grandparents and lives/works in brothels.
Semi orphan child living single parent (either with mother or father) mostly left with grandparents.
Desertion of parents leads the child to live with grandparents. In Engal Kural project location, a 13 year old girl lives with her three siblings and grandfather. Her father got married for the second time and her mother migrated to some other place, due to which the child ended up living with her grandfather. The grandfather was unable to take care of the children; he has sent this girl child to the textile mill to work.
Children of migrant parents- Permanent or temporary migration of parents for employment leads to children in kinship care.
Children with severe disability are mostly left in the care of grandparents due to economic compulsions.
Children of ailing and sick parents are mostly left in the care of grandparents. In case of HIV infected/affected parents, parents affected by TB leave the child in the care of grandparents due to fear of infecting their child.
