PRERANA
PRERANA has been working in rural areas of North Karnataka for the last 20 odd years. Prerana means inspiration! It began working in 1989 in Lingasugur Taluk of Rachur district of Karnataka. Over the years PRERANA has developed many programmes related to primary education and higher education for children of the marginalised community specifically focussing on Madiga children, Swasth (Health) Plus to improve health conditions of poor people, effective village planning programmes, sustainable agriculture, organizing and empowerment of devadasi women, developing educational standards of the Madiga community by providing quality education through establishing Higher education Fund, access to hostel facilities. PRERANA’s programmes in rural areas are designed and implemented in a decentralized way. The Bidugade Project is being implemented in Lingasugur and Raichur under the able leadership of Mr. Shivram Reddy who has been focussing on community development issues for many years now.
PRERANA develops and implements many programmes to enhance the education, economic and social status of the women and children from marginalised communities. Towards this it implements programmes such as Prathibha Poshak, a programme to financial and other academic support to meritorious students from poor families; ‘Improve reach of Primary education’ to ensure that every child goes to school; conducting ‘Grama Shiskshana Sabha’ to discuss the dropouts, poor attendance from teachers in their villages. PRERANA considers community involvement important in order to sustain, build and attain consistency of the programmes on a long term basis. Parivarthan, a programme implemented by PERANA focuses on community involvement in all it interventions and community is the focal point for all its activities. One of most significant collaboration of the organization has been with the Nava Jeevan Mahila Okuta (NJMO), a collective of women formed with an aim of empowering devadasi women. NJMO addresses the issues of Child marriage, Girl child education, Devadasi system, Trafficking, Health rights, Property rights, Violence against women. Through this collaboration PRERANA has been focusing on effective advocacy interventions on these community issues.
Vision: Empowerment of Madiga community through quality education and establishing care and protection systems for children
Objectives:
- To prevent, protect and rescue children from being dedicated to devadasi system, child labour system and trafficking for commercial sexual exploitation in Raichur district
- Ensure quality education to children of Madiga community
- Nurture and sensitise children to be socially responsible and active citizens
- To educate, empower women and to strengthen them through self-help groups, women Sanghas and Women’s Co-operative bank to become effective forums to tackle the social, cultural and economic problems.
EveryChild India and PRERANA: Working together
EveryChild India and PRERANA entered into partnership in 2006 to implement the Bidugade Project in 44 villages of Lingsugur block of Raichur District in Karnataka. Through this project the organization has been working towards creating quality education support by establishing child activity centres, establishing the higher education fund, running a campaign for ensuring hostel facilities for children from the dalit communities. PRERANA has been working towards organizing women into Sanghas and federating women to form Women’s Banks. The organization has been focusing on creating care and protection systems for children in difficult circumstances. Their significant advocacy initiatives have been on the orphan children and girl children who are at the risk of being trafficked under the guise of the devadasi practice.
